My friend, Larry Fobes, Director of Wayne State University’s School of Business Institute for Organizational and Industrial Competitiveness was asked about the concept of being a “born leader” by Crain’s Detroit Business . He offers that some are better leaders because of their “personality, insights and various capabilities” and goes on to say, “everyone can get better at it with practice, paying attention to it, training and feedback. ”
Coaching is a process by which leaders pay attention to what they are doing, while they are doing it, and invite objective feedback to build their leadership skills. These individuals have the courage to face their weaknesses (which by the way are simply strengths that are overused) and accept who they are. But successful leaders don’t stop at acceptance. They move into action on the behaviors they discover are not serving them and practice (with the help of a coach) adapting to become more effective.
