This is a great time of year to ease into networking in the spirit of “giving back.” The holidays are fast approaching, and community-based groups are gearing up for events and programs to benefit the Detroit metro area. Working toward a common goal can make it easier for the novice networking jobseeker to get to know people more quickly. And according to many reports, the not-for-profit industry is among the fastest growing sector.
Remember that networking is about being genuine and authentic, building relationships, asking people for their help in your search, and learning how you can help others. There is a saying that is a mantra of LBN, a networking group I belong to, that goes like this: “givers get.” That’s right, just like the Good Book says, “it is in giving that we receive” — so volunteer for a charity or cause that you believe in. You’ll be amazed at the people you will meet who will be of the same mind…and, if you ask them, they may just help YOU out by introducing you to your potential new boss.
Not sure how to hook up with a volunteer opportunity? Not sure where to go to “give to get?” Check out www.volunteermatch.org. This site allows you to type in the location within which you wish to work as well as the type of cause you are most passionate about and then lists many organizations with whom you can connect. Once you connect with a group, give of your time and talents. It will keep you visible to the people who can make that important introduction of you to an employer.
